Roper St. Francis To Sink Time Capsule
Heart and Vascular Tower Employees Include Mementos, Letters to the Future
Roper St. Francis Healthcare is making history, sinking a time capsule to celebrate the opening of its new Heart and Vascular Tower. A special time capsule presentation is planned for RSFH employees and volunteers during a celebration scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at the Tower’s main entrance on Calhoun St. At that time, each department or nursing unit that will move into the new tower will contribute an item or items representative of the work they do at Roper St. Francis.
“The tower belongs to the doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers employed here as well as the community. We wanted those who work here every day to feel ownership, and to contribute something to the time capsule,” said Matt Severance, Roper Hospital CEO and Vice President of Operations for Roper St. Francis Healthcare.
The 16 X 16 X 36 inch steel time capsule contains various medical technology and photographs, books about Roper St. Francis’ history, and letters written to the future.
It will be opened in 44 years on the occasion of Roper Hospital's bicentennial in 2050.
“We wanted to include technology we use every day that may change dramatically in the next 44 years,” said Jeb Hallett, M.D., Medical Director of Roper St. Francis Heart & Vascular Center. “The physician members of our Heart & Vascular Team chose an aortic stent graft, which is used to treat aortic aneurysms.”
Children of Roper St. Francis employees, who currently attend the health system’s Learning Center, contributed artwork ranging from hand and foot prints to colorful pictures.
"We have infants just a few weeks old through children age four. It will be fun for them to see their artwork when the capsule is opened in 44 years,” said Marjorie Fitzgibbon, the Center’s Director. “I hope that it will bring back many fond memories of their time spent at our Learning Center.”
”This time capsule has been a great way to get the employees involved in the Heart and Vascular Tower opening festivities and to truly understand that it represents a historic milestone for our hospital, healthcare system, and the communities we serve,” said Severance. “This time capsule is something we can all enjoy when it's opened in 2050.”
“This tower is a one-stop-shop for heart and vascular patients, there's nothing like it in the region. It raises the bar for heart and vascular care. We're all very excited about the tower and what it will mean to care in the community,” he added.
