Ultrasound

Ultrasound exams are used to produce an image of the internal structures of the body, and are performed with the use of an ultrasound beam (very high frequency sound waves). As the beam passes through tissues, an echo will bounce off structures in your body and a computer in the ultrasound scanner displays the echo images on a monitor. These images are done "real time," which means that the sonographer is able to see the structures in your body on the screen while you are breathing and moving.

Ultrasound can scan any body structure that is not hidden behind bone or air. It is useful in visualizing both superficial body parts as well as deeper structures.

During an ultrasound exam you will be asked to lie down on an exam table. The room will have lowered lights so that it is easier for the sonographer to see the computer monitor. The area to be examined will be uncovered and the sonographer will put a warm gel on your skin. This gel is water based and lets the ultrasound beam go from the transducer through your skin. This gel will not stain your clothes or skin. The sonographer will then move the transducer over your skin and take multiple images of the area being scanned. Ultrasound procedures are harmless and may be used with complete safety, even on pregnant women.

Imaging Services provides ultrasound exams for the following areas:

  • Breast
  • Renal (Kidneys)
  • Scrotal (Testicular)
