Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is one of the most comprehensive
diagnostic tools available to physicians. MRI uses radio waves and a strong magnetic
field rather than x-rays to provide clear and detailed pictures of internal organs
and tissues. There are a variety of MRI systems that use magnets of different strengths,
which produce different quality images. The powerful computer in the MRI scanner
reconstructs data into images that are usually displayed as "slices" through the body.
Images are formed in three different cross-sections and can be linked together to show a
3 dimensional picture of the bone, internal organs or other tissue structures within the
body. MRI has proven valuable for the diagnosis of a broad range of conditions, including
cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare utilizes the best technology and procedures in MRI, including the GE Signa TwinSpeed 1.5T MR scanners. This equipment has drawn praise from users for its image quality, speed and versatility for a wide range of diagnostic studies. The MRI system is designed to increase system performance while increasing patient comfort. The new scanner reduces noise loudness by 40 percent and the wider opening accommodates larger patients and may make exams more tolerable for claustrophobic patients.
Although somewhat similar to computed tomography (CT) in scan appearance,
MRI can show much more detail than a CT scan and has different clinical applications.
MRI is the modality of choice to evaluate disc and joint disease. Cardiac MR, with its
unique ability to provide simultaneous information about anatomy, function and tissue
character, has become a complimentary modality in a wide range of pathologies, such as
aortic disease, masses, congenital heart disease, ventricular function, and
cardiomyopathies.
With a new software system, breast MR images can be processed with coloration and intensity, showing the probability of cancer in lesions. The lack of ionizing radiation and its non-invasive nature make MRI ideal for pediatric imaging.
Typical MR exams require 45 minutes to complete. Some patients may
find the exam uncomfortable due to having to lie still for a relatively long period of
time, the noise produced by the scanner, and the enclosed space through which the
patient must lay in during the procedure. All of these difficulties can be alleviated
by the technologist performing the scan. To provide the patient with a more relaxed
environment, Roper St. Francis offers bright, spacious exam rooms illuminated by
natural light. In extreme cases of anxiety or discomfort, your physician may help
you with the exam by pre-ordering your exam with sedation. Any discomfort is far
outweighed by all the clear information the procedure provides.
Some procedures require patient preparation.
