Mammography

A mammogram is a set of X-ray images of the breasts. The American Cancer Society recommends that women follow its current guidelines for early detection of breast cancer beginning a regular program of mammography screening at age 40, followed by mammograms every one to two years.

To schedule a Mammogram, please call 402-5000.

Mammography Services Offered by Roper St. Francis Healthcare:

  • Screening mammograms
  • Diagnostic mammograms
  • Breast ultrasounds, including cyst aspirations and core biopsy
  • Ductography
  • Mammotomes

Screening mammography ~ Screening mammography is performed on women without symptoms. The purpose is to look for any early signs of breast cancer. The majority of these mammograms show no abnormality.

Diagnostic mammography ~ Diagnostic mammography is performed to resolve a particular question related to the breast. This can be one of several situations:

  • Any signs or symptoms related to the breasts, such as a lump, breast pain, nipple discharge, unexplained skin changes of either breast, or new or unexplained asymmetry of the breasts
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Breast ultrasounds, including cyst aspirations and core biopsy
  • Evaluation of an indeterminate abnormality seen on a screening mammogram

Breast Ultrasound ~ An image using sound waves to further evaluate an abnormality in the breast.

Ductography ~ An x-ray of the ductal system of the breast.

Mammotome ~ A biopsy, small tissue removal, of a breast abnormality. For more information visit www.breastbiopsy.com

Wire localization ~ A localization of a breast abnormality prior to surgical removal.

Your doctor will provide you with an order for the mammogram.

Some procedures require patient preparation.
