Roper St. Francis Hospital - Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant has experienced exponential growth in the past fifteen years and getting to our downtown, West Ashley or Berkeley facilities during an emergency has become increasingly difficult. When accidents happen, when superior service matters most, we must be there for everyone who needs us. Fulfilling this dedication to our community begins with expansion. Now, in times of crisis residents of Mount Pleasant and the barrier islands will no longer need to cross the bridge into downtown; high-quality, familiar Roper St. Francis Healthcare service will be available in their backyard.

This new hospital will bring stellar service and real options to the people of Mount Pleasant. And, while this campus will take on the unique spirit of Mount Pleasant and the surrounding areas, it will still be guided by the same leaders who have made the Roper St. Francis Healthcare family of hospitals such a community fixture. This hospital will be staffed by familiar doctors and directed by local leaders, and Mount Pleasant Hospital patients can count on the same high standard of service they’ve received for years downtown and in West Ashley.

  • The new full-service Mount Pleasant Hospital will include:
  • Accessibility for Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms today and as they expand
  • 250,000 square feet of in-patient, diagnostic, support, and administrative services space
  • 85 acute care beds (including 60 surgery beds, 15 women’s care beds and 10 intensive/critical care beds)
  • 24-hour emergency care
  • A Women’s Pavilion to serve women’s unique needs including: state-of-the-art delivery suites, Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, breast screening center, and obstetric services
  • Surgical services (including 4 general ORs and 2 endoscopy ORs)
  • Non-invasive cardiology services
  • State-of-the-art imaging services to increase speed and accuracy of diagnosis including: a multi-slice CT scanner, a 1.5T MRI scanner and other lab equipment to support fluoroscopy, mammography, digital radiology, ultrasound, bone density and nuclear medicine
  • Nature running trail around the campus
    • Accessible to all Mount Pleasant residents
    • Encourages physical fitness among patients and the community at large
    • Ties the hospital and its mission to everyone, not just the sick or injured

Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center

The aim of the Cancer Center on the Bon Secours St. Francis campus is to treat cancer in a better way. Unified treatment, convenience for patients, the best-trained physicians, and access to up-to-the-minute technology will combine to provide earlier detection and quicker, less invasive elimination of tumors and an overall superior experience. The Center’s unique design will offer better access to specialists, shops that cater to the unique needs of cancer patients, resource libraries and more comfortable, patient-centric spaces.

  • Technology
  • Linear Accelerator – A dynamic radiation therapy, this tool better targets tumors while sparing surrounding tissue and reducing recovery time.
  • CT-Simulator – Especially in combination with existing PET-CT scanner, the Simulator helps doctors better define tumors to create more effective treatment plans.
  • Outpatient Chemo Chemotherapy patients will now have access to quality treatment in a spacious, comfortable setting where all their needs are met in one place.
  • Cancer Rehab – Continuing care once physical treatment is complete, this new center will provide psycho-social therapy, a wonderful complement to physical care, to cancer survivors.
  • Breast Screening Center

Bon Secours St. Francis Meditation Garden

  • A labyrinth pathway, an ancient aid to meditation and prayer
  • A spiral prayer garden leading to a cascading fountain
  • Comfortable benches for long periods of quiet reflection
  • Wheelchair accessibility

Roper Hospital Cancer Care Technology

  • CyberKnife - This non-invasive technology allows previously non-operable tumors to be tracked and eliminated. Unlike traditional systems that can only treat brain tumors, the CyberKnife System can also treat tumors on the spine, lung, prostate, liver and pancreas.
  • Linear Accelerator with IGRT– An incredibly accurate tool, Image Guided Radiation Therapy helps doctors treat even the smallest tumors that once could only be removed through surgery.

Personal Guidance

The ground-breaking Cancer Navigator system will:

    • Provide personalized guidance for all cancer patients, from diagnosis through treatment and rehabilitation
    • Ensure that patients have access to a small group of doctors, nurses and specialists they will actually get to know throughout their treatment
    • Develop a real sense of cohesion among all the cancer treatment elements, a common thread that makes their treatment feel like a seamless journey, not a series of discordant stops
    • Become a permanent program which will be fully integrated into the cancer treatment program

Renovations

The existing cancer facilities will be refurbished to create a setting that is more accessible and more easily navigable. Necessary elements include:

    • A more accessible layout so all diagnosis and treatment areas are within the same part of the hospital
    • More comfortable and accommodating Radiation Oncology facilities
    • A “support wing” which includes access to resources, social worker, chapel and meditation room, dietician and temporary living quarters for families of patients receiving care

Cardiac Rehabilitation at Roper Hospital

  • Today, Roper Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center is the most advanced facility of its kind in the state. Indeed, patients come from throughout the region to receive the treatment available only there. Although our expertise in diagnosis and cardiac treatment are unmatched, that is only part of the healing process.  Lasting health is best restored when the cardiac patient actively participates in a program of cardiac rehabilitation.

At present, only about 25-30% of heart patients return for necessary rehabilitation. In part, geography and logistics act as barriers but the even more serious challenge centers on the current capabilities and condition of our rehab center.  Staffed by outstanding rehab professionals, we must ensure that the facility allows them to shine.  Renovations of our existing facility would better accommodate the needs of more patients, provide a comprehensive “whole body” approach to the healing process, and extend the Roper Heart and Vascular experience from diagnosis to surgery and through a thorough rehabilitation. The new facility will include:

  • Updated cardiac equipment
  • State-of-the-art technologies for measuring and recording improvement
  • Expanded studio area for stretching, yoga, and tai chi
  • A demonstration kitchen for healthy diet cooking classes
  • Classroom space for stress management, social therapy, and other non-physical rehab techniques
  • Renovations including window and skylight installation to provide more natural light
