Roper St. Francis Healthcare has a long tradition of putting the people of the Lowcountry first. In 1829, Colonel Thomas Roper left $30,000 to the physicians of the Medical Society of South Carolina; it was with this gift that the Medical Society established Roper Hospital to treat the sick without regard to complexion, religion or nationality. In 1882, the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy founded St. Francis Xavier Hospital, guided by their strong philosophy to help all those in need. In 1999, these two hospitals joined to form what is now Roper St. Francis Healthcare, the only not-for-profit, non-governmental healthcare system in the region.
With facilities throughout the region, Roper St. Francis Healthcare provides over $34 million in direct community support and charitable care each year. We know what it means to put the patients first, leading to top patient satisfaction awards and ratings at the absolute highest levels. Our physicians are nearly 100 percent board certified, far exceeding the national average of 60 percent. They have long-term relationships with Roper St. Francis Healthcare, a strong commitment to the future of medicine in South Carolina and are integral members of this community, calling the Lowcountry home.
