Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. There may be no symptoms in the early stages of the disease and it is estimated that half of all people affected by glaucoma may not know they have it. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve.

Glaucoma signs on a complete eye exam include; high eyeball pressure and characteristic damage to the optic nerve and peripheral vision. The doctors of the Roper St. Francis Eye Surgery Centers are experienced in the medical management of glaucoma (eyedrops) as well as surgery and lasers, including Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty and Surgical Trabeculectomy.

Glaucoma risk factors include:

• Age over 50
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• African American
• Family history of glaucoma

People at high risk for glaucoma should get a complete eye exam, including eye dilation, every one to two years.
