Genetic Counseling
With the exception of age, the greatest risk factor for breast cancer is a family history of the disease. About 5-10 percent of women with breast cancer have a family history of one or two relatives with the disease. Roper St. Francis Cancer Center offers a genetic counseling program for those whose family history suggests they may be carriers of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, two genes strongly associated with the development of breast cancer.
Palliative Care
Palliative care is a specialized care for
people who are living with an advanced disease.
The goal of palliative care is to provide
the best quality of life for patients by
ensuring their comfort and dignity. Palliative
care focuses on the whole person and includes
expert medical care, symptom and pain management.
It also includes emotional and spiritual
support expressly tailored to the patient
and their familyıs needs and wishes. Quality
of life is an important aspect of palliative
care, which is why the care team works with
you, your attending doctor and family to
achieve your goals.

Cancer Registry
The Cancer Registry at the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center began keeping track of information on cancer patients January 1, 1992. The Cancer Registry is a data system for the collection, management, and analysis of this data for patients with a malignancy or cancer. Data is compiled and shared with county, state, and national agencies interested in the study of cancer and authorized to use the data by the Cancer Committee. In fact, most states, including South Carolina, have laws that require hospitals and physicians to report cancer cases to their State Cancer Registry. Strict confidentiality is maintained at all times. The Cancer Registry submits data annually to the National Cancer Data Base and the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry.
