In February of 2007, BSSF Nursing implemented a shared governance program in order to involve more direct care nurses in decision-making regarding professional practice, research, management/finance, and professional advancement. Representatives from unit-based councils participate on hospital-wide councils, which in turn report their discussions and recommendations to the Leadership Advisory Council.
These councils are interdisciplinary and very active, tackling such issues as nursing theory and delivery of care models, evidence-based practice and process improvements, implementation of a clinical ladder and a residence program, and cost-effective supply usage. For example, the Research Council conducts an annual Sacred Cow Contest to encourage all Nursing staff to examine their everyday practices for validity and appropriateness.
